We recognize the extreme financial burden that caring for a pediatric cancer patient has on many families. A 2012 survey conducted by the American Childhood Cancer Organization (“ACCO”), in collaboration with Inspire/ClinicaHealth, Inc. (“Inspire”), of more than 100 parents of pediatric cancer patients indicated that 3 out of 10 families surveyed spent between $2,500 and $10,000 out of pocket on uninsured medical expenses, such as co-pays, home care, mental health services, lab procedures, nutritional supplements, and alternative treatments.¹.A further 6 out of 10 families spent between $1,000 and $10,000 out of pocket on additional non-medical expenses, such as transportation, lodging, childcare, and education services.
²A separate survey of 1,708 families, conducted by the ACCO, indicated that nearly 50% of the families surveyed incurred “considerable” to “severe” household debt as a result of the diagnosis; with over 38% of families surveyed reporting that one adult family member had to stop work entirely to manage and maintain a child’s illness.³With that in mind, Riprap intends to facilitate these home care services to qualifying families at no cost to the families.
